1. عَلَّمونا الصَبرَ يُطفي ما اِستَعَر

    إِنَّما الأَجرُ لِمَفجوعٍ صَبَر

    They taught us patience quenches raging fires

    Reward's for the bereaved who's patience perseveres

  2. صَدمَةٌ في الغَربِ أَمسى وَقعُها

    في رُبوعِ الشَرقِ مَشئومَ الأَثَر

    A shock in the West, its impact ominous

    Shook spirits in Egypt's land unstirred by summits

  3. زَلزَلَت في أَرضِ مِصرٍ أَنفُساً

    لَم يُزَلزِلها قَرارُ المُؤتَمَر

    No clash of stars in the heavens

    Could impact Earth's people so gravely somber

  4. ما اِصطِدامُ النَجمِ بِالنَجمِ عَلى

    ساكِني الأَرضِ بِأَدهى وَأَمَر

    Death plucked the first fruits of Egypt's youth

    Reaping the fairest flowers in their splendor

  5. قَطَفَ المَوتُ بَواكيرَ النُهى

    فَجَنى أَجمَلَ طاقاتِ الزَهَر

    Death swept over our moons

    Moon after moon collapsed asunder

  6. وَعَدا المَوتُ عَلى أَقمارِنا

    فَتَهاوَوا قَمَراً بِعدَ قَمَر

    For the Nile, knowledge, and in God's trust

    The twelve met their ends yonder

  7. في سَبيلِ النيلِ وَالعِلمِ وَفي

    ذِمَّةِ اللَهِ قَضى الإِثنا عَشَر

    O East's stars, what misfortune befell you

    In the orbit of the West, no twist or bend spared

  8. أَي بُدورَ الشَرقِ ماذا نابَكُم

    في مَسارِ الغَربِ مِن صَرفِ الغِيَر

    News that severed wishes completely

    And deafened our hearing, blinded our stare

  9. نَبَأٌ قَطَّعَ أَوصالَ المُنى

    وَأَصَمَّ السَمعَ مِنّا وَالبَصَر

    How many groans has Egypt voiced from her heat

    Sweeping the sand, birds and bees bare

  10. كَم بِمِصرٍ زَفرَةٌ مِن حَرِّها

    كُنِسَ الأَعفَرُ وَالطَيرُ وَكَر

    How many a father in Aswan, heart distraught

    Lost sons, bleak fate, heavy despair

  11. كَم أَبٍ أَسوانَ دامٍ قَلبُهُ

    مُستَطيرِ اللُبِّ مَفقورِ الظَهَر

    Grim faces from the news, glances joy robbed

    Mothers bereaved, infants forlorn, nurture impaired

  12. ساهِمَ الوَجهِ لِما حَلَّ بِهِ

    سادِرَ النَظرَةِ مِن وَقعِ الخَبَر

    A grieving eve 'neath shadows teaching sorrow to trees

    Questioning birds about their missing companions each time one chirps

  13. كَم بِها والِدَةٍ والِهَةٍ

    عَضَّها الثُكلُ بِنابٍ فَعَقَر

    Asking stars about their missing own

    Each time one hides or peers

  14. ذاتِ نَوحٍ تَحتَ أَذيالِ الدُجى

    عَلَّمَ الأَشجانَ سُكّانَ الشَجَر

    Giving life for one who'd tell her

    That he escaped the grip of fate so severe

  15. تَسأَلُ الأَطيارَ عَن مُؤنِسِها

    كُلَّما صَفَّقَ طَيرٌ وَاِصطَحَر

    Oh Egypt, each day brings new calamity

    And tribulations from which you cannot veer

  16. تَسأَلُ الأَنجُمَ عَن واحِدِها

    كُلَّما غُوِّرَ نَجمٌ أَو ظَهَر

    Minor are your woes, unless from your sons

    In your soil a remedy they confer

  17. تَهَبُ العُمرَ لِمَن يُنبِئُها

    أَنَّهُ أَفلَتَ مِن كَفِّ القَدَر

    You've belittled their glory in transporting them

    When one of the greatest bore them over here

  18. وَيحَ مِصرٍ كُلَّ يَومٍ حادِثٌ

    وَبَلاءٌ ما لَها مِنهُ مَفَر

    Be they in Eastern or Western earth laid to rest

    Their final place is one and the same, have no fear

  19. هانَ ما تَلقاهُ إِلّا خَطبُها

    في تُرابٍ مِن بَنيها مُدَّخَر

    Do you disdain that we see a day ours

    In the realm of knowledge, an acre held dear

  20. قَد ظَلَمتُم مَجدَهُم في نَقلِهِم

    إِنَّما نَقلَتُهُم إِحدى الكُبَر

    Do you resent that we honor them

    Among authors of history and pioneers

  21. فَسَواءٌ في تُرابِ الشَرقِ أَم

    في تَرابِ الغَربِ كانَ المُستَقَر

    A landmark, when one passes it

    A youth hails their name with pride and a tear

  22. أَأَبَيتُم أَن نَرى يَوماً لَنا

    في رُبوعِ العِلمِ شِبراً فَنُسَر

    A guide for Egyptians when honeyed with fervor

    In the West to their homeland they lovingly cheer

  23. أَضَنِنتُم أَن تُقيموا بَينهُم

    شاهِداً مِنّا لِكُتّابِ السِيَر

    How many of our gifts on their land

    Framed a miracle amidst portraits so revered

  24. وَمَزاراً كُلَّما يَمَّمَهُ

    ناشِئٌ حَيّا ثَراهُ وَاِدَّكَر

    Rising as symbols of bygone golden ages

    When knowledge upon them shone and prospered

  25. وَدَليلاً لِاِبنِ مِصرٍ كُلَّما

    قامَ في الغَربِ بِمِصرٍ فَاِفتَخَر

    Make then our deceased amongst them today

    The finest symbol of hope so endeared

  26. كَم مَسَلّاتٍ لَنا في أَرضِهِم

    صَوَّرَت مُعجِزَةً بَينَ الصُوَر

    Rome's children eased our sorrow

    With your blessed hands' gentle gift sincere

  27. قُمنَ رَمزاً لِعُصورٍ قَد خَلَت

    أَشرَقَ العِلمُ عَلَيها وَاِزدَهَر

    You gathered our sons in a glowing wreath

    Strewn across your valley, their buds once here

  28. فَاِجعَلوا أَمواتَنا اليَومَ بِها

    خَيرَ رَمزٍ لِرَجاءٍ مُنتَظَر

    And when they were laid to rest, the cream of your crop

    Joined the procession, their heads bowed in tear

  29. أُمَّةُ الطِليانِ خَفَّفتِ الأَسى

    بِصَنيعٍ مِن أَياديكِ الغُرَر

    All came who favorites were, grief-stricken, downcast,

    Your own wept for ours, wetting their new homes with tears

  30. جَمَعَت كَفّاكِ عِقداً زاهِياً

    مِن بَنينا فَوقَ واديكِ اِنتَثَر

    You did as God did for you, and more

    Nobler than generous souls could ever endear

  31. وَمَشى في مَوكِبِ الدَفنِ لَهُم

    مِن بَنيكُم كُلُّ مِسماحٍ أَغَر

    For you we cried in compassion

    The day we heard the sad news, our treasures no longer dear

  32. وَسَعى كُلُّ اِمرِئٍ مُفضِلٍ

    بادِيَ الأَحزانِ مَخفوضَ النَظَر

    You remembered and thanked for our gifts

    And Rome's sons are the foremost in thanks and good cheer

  33. وَبَكَت أَفلاذُكُم أَفلاذَنا

    بِدُموعٍ رَوَّضَت تِلكَ الحُفَر

    O Nile's youth, no danger should deter you

    From pursuing glory, no hazard interfere

  34. وَصَنَعتُم صَنَعَ اللَهُ لَكُم

    فَوقَ ما يَصنَعُهُ الخِلُّ الأَبَر

    They who love the means to greatness

    Shed all caution and fear

  35. قَد بَكَينا لَكُمُ مِن رَحمَةِ

    يَومَ مِسّينا فَأَرخَصنا الدُرَر

    Seek knowledge, even if the journey's rough

    Beyond what mortal creatures can bear

  36. فَحَفِظتُم وَشَكَرتُم صُنعَنا

    وَبَنو الرومانِ أَولى مَن شَكَر

    We're in an age of ongoing holy war

    Between death and life, no peace interfered

  37. أَي شَبابَ النيلِ لا تَقعُد بِكُم

    عَن خَطيرِ المَجدِ أَخطارُ السَفَر

  38. إِنَّ مَن يَعشَقُ أَسبابَ العُلا

    يَطرَحُ الإِحجامَ عَنهُ وَالحَذَر

  39. فَاِطلُبوا العِلمَ وَلَو جَشَّمَكُم

    فَوقَ ما تَحمِلُ أَطواقُ البَشَر

  40. نَحنُ في عَهدِ جِهادٍ قائِمٍ

    بَينَ مَوتٍ وَحَياةٍ لَم تَقِر
