Nor did Ja'far fear that his debauchery

Would strike her with greater woes than I.

Neither the day of Buwayn when the spears drank deep,

Nor the fire itself, had it been cast upon them.

Her foes knew well that Ja'far

Would ward off Ja'far however the keen swords smote.

Can the whelps of Ja'far bear with patience

The onslaught of him whose cubs are lions?

Soon shall Ja'far attain the goal

Of her who was wronged, even to Tuháma's sands.

When Ja'far passed the ridge of Al-Himá

The tombs cried out to him till he answered.

Ours are the Holy Mosques twain, and the Kaaba moot,

And theirs but names which we have made the greater.

Save God alone! He has no likeness,

To Him belong the nations of the absent past.

The Imam of the Faith! How many a sire and brother

Has he whose light once lit the broad earth!

When the East and West have met from every side

In some consecrated place where all concerns are thine.

Man shot his arrows at the people of Tamm, but I see not

That hatred of Tamm can harm his people.

    Had Mother-of-Men Eve attacked

Tamm ibn Murr not a protector could she find.

The Lord of the Heaven built our House and exalted it,

And in the Earth made oceans flow from our Bahrayn.

And I was told that Ja'far raged in his bastardy

As the Thamúd in their subversive work.

They cry aloud beseeching drink of him,

When on them from es-Shi'rá the dust-storms lowered.

They turn aside from womankind whose eyes

Are hapless and downcast for that the times are evil.
