كَيفَ بِدَهرٍ لا يَزالُ يَرومُني
بِداهِيَةٍ فيها أَشَدُّ مِنَ القَتلِ
How unfortunate is time's ever-scheming course
With perils worse than mortal blows.
وَكَيفَ بِرامٍ لا تَطيشُ سِهامُهُ
وَلا نَحنُ نَرميهِ فَنُدرِكَ بِالنَبلِ
And how unfair fate's errant arrows are -
We do not loose them, yet they find their mark.
إِذا اِبنُ أَبي سودٍ خَلا مِن مَكانِهِ
فَقَد مالَتِ الأَيّامُ بِالحَدَثِ المُجلي
When Abi Sud's son is gone from his place,
Days are tinged by the dims of eve.
