أَلَم يَكُ قَتلُ عَبدِ القَيسِ ظُلماً
أَبا حَفصٍ مِنَ الحُرَمِ العِظامِ
Was not the slaying of ʿAbd al-Qays an injustice—
O Abu Hafs—one of the gravest sacrileges?
قَتيلُ عَداوَةٍ لَم يَجنِ ذَنباً
يُقَطَّعُ وَهوَ يَهتِفُ بِالأَمامِ
A victim of enmity, who had committed no crime,
he was hacked to pieces while crying, “Forward!”
