1. When the anxious well-wishers came to us and raised the alarm,

    warning of two chieftains whose deadly menace we feared,

  2. she said, “Come, make the rounds among your friends and seek

    two small waterskins whose pouring would last beyond an hour.”

  3. May God reward, on our behalf, the two sons of ʿUmayra—when

    our kinsmen were far away—with goodness whenever He rewards them.

  4. They sustained us as we set out one evening

    with two great waterskins—their bounty to us unstinted—

  5. two great waterskins, two ample hides of game; neither was

    made of sheepskin, nor was either sewn from leather patches.

  6. They seemed twin basins in smooth rock, filled to the brim

    by the Pleiades’ auspicious rain-stars, their moisture never seeping away.
