لَولا دِفاعُكَ يَومَ العَقرِ ضاحِيَةً

عَنِ العِراقِ وَنارُ الحَربِ تَلتَهِبُ

Had you not defended Iraq

On that fateful morning, with war raging,

لَولا دِفاعُكَ عَنهُم عارِضاً لِجِباً

لَأَصبَحوا عَن جَديدِ الأَرضِ قَد ذَهَبوا

Had you not shielded the people,

They would have vanished from the face of earth.

لَمّا اِلتَقوا وَخُيولَ الشامِ فَاِجتَلَدوا

بِالمَشرِفِيَّةِ فيها المَوتُ وَالحَرَبُ

When they met the cavalry of Damascus

Death and war awaited in Al-Mushrifiyyah.

خَلّوا يَزيدَ فَتى الأَزدَينِ مُنجَدِلاً

بِالعَقرِ مِنهُم وَمِن ساداتِهِم عُصَبُ

They left Yazid’s young men confounded

In Al-Aqir, their chiefs and nobles decimated.

حامى عَلَيهِ شِنانٌ في كَتيبَتِهِ

وَأَسلَمَتهُ هُناكَ الحُتُّ وَالنَدَبُ

Guarding him was Shinan in his brigade

As spears and lamentations rained.

فَما الشَجاعَةُ إِلّا دونَ نَجدَتِهِ

وَلا المَواهِبُ إِلّا دونَ ما يَهَبُ

For courage exists not without his support

Nor gifts, except what he endows.
