1. When, with our eyebrows, we tell each other

what lies within our souls, though we have not spoken—

  2. Indeed, I saw you in a dream, lying beside me,

and kissed upon your lips the sweetest kiss.

  3. Tomorrow and the morrow after—both those days—

will reveal to you the news you had not known.

  4. The horses know that we are their horsemen,

and that we wheel them back after a comrade abandoned to the foe.

  5. The spoils of the day of Qarqarā were ours,

bestowed upon us, as was every legacy of a noble, munificent lord.

  6. With us astride, they trample armored champions, grim-faced,

as harvested grain is trodden—though they are not fasting.

  7. We remain defiant when spear-fighting shatters our lances,

among warriors marked by battle-signs, with every keen white blade.

  8. And when they don iron upon iron,

they drive out the sleeping mother of the huddled nestlings.
