رَأَيتُ بَني حَنيفَةَ يَومَ لاقَوا
وَقَد جَشَأَ النُفوسُ عَنِ التَراقي
I saw the sons of Hanifa on the day they met the foe,
their souls already surging past their collarbones;
يُفَرِّجُ عَنهُمُ الغَمَراتُ ضَربٌ
إِذا قامَت عَلى قَدَمٍ وَساقِ
blows would clear the engulfing perils from them
whenever battle raged at full pitch.
إِذا سَلَّ السُيوفَ بَني لُجَيمٍ
فَلَيسَ لَهُنَّ حينَ يَقَعنَ واقِ
When they draw their swords, O sons of Lujaym,
there is no one to ward them off when they strike.
لَقوا مَن سارَ مِن هَجَرٍ إِلَيهِم
بِنَحسِ النَجمِ وَالقَمَرِ المُحاقِ
They met those who had marched from Hajar toward them
under an ill-starred star and a moon gone dark.
