A vision of Sulayma came to you by night, after
the wakeful one among the night-talkers had grown still, late into the night.
It visited weary travelers amid weary mounts, who pillowed their heads on
the forelegs of exhausted mounts, gaunt and lying apart.
So we spent the night as though pure ambergris lay between us,
and a merchants’ perfume-bale whose musk-pouch had split open.
