By my life, upon Khalid's back there indeed fell
Showers that did not pour from the streams of rain.
Do you beat for disobedience—as you claim—whoever disobeyed,
Yet yourself disobey the Commander of the Faithful, O brother of Qasr?
But for Yazid ibn al-Muhallab, there would have soared
A broad-winged eagle carrying your hand to the eagles in the nest.
By my life, Ibn Shaybah indeed followed a course
That made you see the stars of night, visible and coursing.
So take death in both your hands, for you were only
Repaid in kind with the tightly plaited brown whips.
I think you grief-stricken over a hypocrite's dwelling,
Who clothed himself in the garments of betrayal and treachery.
