O son of Rabīʿa, have you ever seen anyone
who survives the days, or is granted immortality?
It was as though ʿUbayd were sore-eyed
in al-Ghawr, until the she-camels reached Najd—and he reached it too:
young she-camels—whenever they climbed a broad, level upland,
they cast their gaze toward the farthest flight;
whenever they crossed one hard, level tract, then another.
It was as though we, when they put Thamad
on the right and spread themselves over the rugged upland,
were veering from among them like wild, untamed ostriches.
