1. Make clear, when Mujāshiʿ descends upon you,

or Nahshal into your upland valleys, what you will do,

  2. in a vast, clamorous army whose mass seems like

the eastern flank of ʿAmāyatayn's loftiest peak.

  3. And when Ṭuhayya comes to stand behind me,

the thickets of spears above them sway.

  4. My pool, with the sons of ʿUdus at its watering-place

and the sons of Sharāf, is brimful of noble deeds.

  5. If refuting my poems has already defeated you,

then look, Jarīr, when the assembly meets

  6. and they bellow at one another with throat-sacs, their necks

thick and stout, their mighty camel bulls unrestrained.

  7. Will you indeed face Dārim with the likes of your people—

a people with Zurāra and al-Aqraʿ among them,

  8. and ʿUṭārid, and his father Ḥājib among them,

and the elder Nājiya, munificent and eloquent,

  9. and the leader on the day of Naṭāʿ, Ṣaʿṣaʿa, who

sometimes dealt harm, and sometimes brought benefit?

  10. And ask about us and about you, when there come to Minā

the leading men of every tribe, those who hear

  11. my voice and yours: they will tell you who it is

who defends every noble distinction for Khindif.

  12. And when you take to your jerboa-burrow, you will not find

anyone to help you but another who retreats into a burrow.
