1. When al-Naḍr's courier comes bearing his aid,

    and his authority, he casts off Ibn Ghālib's shackles.

  2. If Mālik has now been carried away

    by Shaʿūb—Death, to whom every traveler is lost—

  3. God, whom you will meet, has indeed sent down

    upon him the dooms of death from every side.

  4. If Mālik has now become abased, long has he

    striven in that calamity—may it have no mouth!—without turning back.

  5. If you made women weep before your own turn,

    noble women—these are the reversals of fortune.

  6. You are requited for what your two hands wrought, and for what

    you knew; so do not be distraught at the turns of misfortune.

  7. And he is now in an abode there, terror-stricken,

    when every side turns away from Mālik.
