قَرَت هاجِرٌ لَيلى فَأَحسَنَتِ القِرى
وَلَكِنَّها لَم تَحمِلِ الرَحلَ هاجِرُ
Hajir hosted Layla and offered excellent hospitality,
but she—Hajir—did not carry the saddle.
فَلَو كُنتُمُ مِن جِذمِ ضَبَّةَ ناقَلَت
بِرَحلِيَ فَتلاءُ الذِراعَينِ ضامِرُ
Had you been of Dabba's stock, there would have trotted along
a lean she-camel with outward-bowed forelegs, bearing my saddle.
وَلَكِنَّكُم قَومٌ ضَلِلتُم أَباكُمُ
فَمَولاكُمُ دوني سَدوسٌ وَعامِرُ
But you are a people who have lost track of your father;
so your patrons, not I, are Sadus and Amir.
