1. When we drove in the prescribed livestock dues, he did not want them,

    And turned away from the little ewe and the camel.

  2. When he set out the whips for us by day,

    We borrowed lengths of silk at interest.

  3. So into Hell we were led by what we took

    Through usury, to spare our backs.

  4. Were the caliph to hear a caller's voice,

    Calling to God, 'Is there anyone to grant me refuge?'

  5. And the voices of women bound together,

    And of their children upon their laps,

  6. Then a herald's tongue would surely answer them—

    For God's faith, fierce in anger and staunch in aid—

  7. God's trusted one, who speaks out when he judges

    By Muhammad's faith—and through it affairs are settled.
