مَروانُ إِنَّ مَطِيَّتي مَعكوسَةٌ
تَرجو الحِباءَ وَرَبُّها لَم يَيأَسِ
Marwān, indeed my mount has been turned back,
hoping for largesse—and her master has not despaired.
وَأَتَيتَني بِصَحيفَةٍ مَختومَةٍ
يُخشى عَلَيَّ بِها حِباءُ النِقرِسِ
And you came to me with a sealed letter,
through which, I fear, gout will be my gift.
أَلقِ الصَحيفَةُ يا فَرَزدَقُ إِنَّها
نَكراءُ مِثلُ صَحيفَةِ المُتَلَمِّسِ
Cast the letter away, Farazdaq—for it is
ominous as the letter of al-Mutalammis.
