1. He has sustained you with the Mighty One's might and strength,

    and given men their portion in their left hands.

  2. So you have now rid their hearts

    of deceit, among the various groups of those tribes.

  3. For people follow only two paths, namely:

    a path of truth or a path of falsehood.

  4. So he unsheathed the sword of holy warfare against them; for only

    by entrusting matters to the Lord of bounties were you granted victory.

  5. And nothing is worse than a traitor's evil deed,

    which he brings on the day when accumulated deeds are tested.

  6. It is his disgrace in this world; and his dwelling,

    because of it, when he meets God, is the worst of dens.

  7. I think the tribe's daughters will withhold every gift,

    every affection and bounty from them.

  8. Then he gave them what lay in the clothes-bags in exchange, when they came

    to you women; and the women traded the camel-litter bindings

  9. for ostriches' swords—except that their beards

    on the chins of their jaws resemble tangled tufts.

  10. Perhaps the women will fend people off from you when there meet

    the detachments of a mighty host and a force taking the field for battle.

  11. And men are only those who trade spear-thrusts in battle

    and strike the head of the challenger prepared to die.

  12. May my mother be your ransom: put a mark upon them,

    and forbid them virtuous wives.

  13. We distinguish between the believers and them

    when they enter the markets amid the gatherings.

  14. For no people are worse than they, except that

    you would take them for the likes of Turks and men of Kabul.

  15. You see the eyes of the perishing turned toward him, as though they were

    the eyes of a wild-cattle herd circling at the watering places.

  16. They watch a lavish giver, as though his serving-bowls were

    the vast, ancient, brimming cisterns of Zarud.
