أَقولُ لِنَفسٍ لا يُجادُ بِمِثلِها
أَلا لَيتَ شِعري ما لَها عِندَ مالِكِ
I say to a soul whose like is not freely given away:
Ah, would that I knew what is due to it from Mālik!
لَها عِندُهُ أَن يَرجِعَ اليَومَ روحُها
إِلَيها وَتَنجو مِن حِذارِ المَهالِكِ
Its due from him is that its spirit return today
To it, and that it escape the dread of deadly perils.
وَأَنتَ اِبنُ جَبّارَي رَبيعَةَ حَلَّقَت
بِكَ الشَمسُ في الخَضراءِ ذاتِ الحَبائِكِ
And you are the son of Rabiʿah’s two mighty lords; the sun has soared
With you in the green heaven with its woven paths.
