ماتَ الَّذي يَرعى حِمى الدينِ وَالَّذي
يَحوطُ حَراهُ بِالمُثَقَّفَةِ السُمرِ
He who tended religion's sanctuary has died, and he who
Guarded its precincts with straightened, tawny spears.
أَقامَ وَشَزرُ الدينِ باقٍ مَريرُهُ
فَأَصبَحَ باقي الدينِ مُنتَكِثَ الشَزرِ
He lived on while religion's cord still held its tight twist;
So what remained of religion was left with its twist unraveled.
وَما أَحَدٌ إِلّا الخَليفَةُ مِثلُهُ
يَموتُ وَلا واراهُ مُنتَضَدُ القَبرُ
And none but the caliph is his equal
Among those who die—may no piled-up grave conceal him!
فَيا لَكَ مِن يَومٍ وَمَرزِئَةٍ لَهُ
تَتَلَّتهُ أَسبابُ المَنِيَّةِ بِالقَهرِ
So, what a day—and what a calamity for him!
Death's causes pursued him with overpowering force.
