1. يَمُتُّ بِكَفٍّ مِن عُتَيبَةَ أَن رَأى

    أَنامِلَهُ رُكِّبنَ في شَرِّ ساعِدِ

    He claims kinship through a palm from ʿUtayba, upon seeing

    his fingers fitted into a forearm’s cleft.

  2. وَمِن قَعنَبٍ هَيهاتَ ما حَلَّ قَعنَبٌ

    بَني الخَطَفى بِالمَنزِلِ المُتَباعِدِ

    And through Qaʿnab as well—far-fetched! Never did Qaʿnab

    dwell among the sons of al-Khaṭafā in the far-removed abode.

  3. وَمِن آلِ عَتّابِ الرَديفِ وَلَم يَكُن

    لَهُم عَندَ أَبوابِ المُلوكِ بِشاهِدِ

    And through the house of ʿAttāb the Companion-Rider—though he was not

    a witness for him at the gates of kings.

  4. فَخَرتَ بِما تَبني رِياحٌ وَجَعفَرٌ

    وَلَستَ بِما تَبني كُلَيبٌ بِحامِدِ

    You boast of what Riyāḥ and Jaʿfar build,

    yet you do not praise what Kulayb builds.
