1. This is he whose tread al-Batha knows,

    and the House knows him, as do the land outside the sanctuary and the sanctuary.

  2. This is the son of the best of all God's servants;

    this is the pious, the unblemished, the pure, the eminent one.

  3. This is Fatimah's son, if you do not know him;

    with his grandfather, the line of God's prophets was sealed.

  4. And your saying, 'Who is this?' does him no harm;

    the Arabs know the one you deny knowing, and so do the non-Arabs.

  5. Both his hands bring succor; their bounty reaches all.

    Their showers are sought, and no want ever befalls them.

  6. Gentle in disposition, his outbursts are not feared.

    Two things adorn him: beauty of form and noble character.

  7. He bears people's heavy burdens when they are weighed down;

    sweet in his ways, he finds 'yes' sweet.

  8. He never said 'no' except in his testimony of faith;

    were it not for that testimony, his 'no' would be 'yes.'

  9. He has embraced all creation with kindness, so there have vanished

    from it the deep darkness, destitution, and want.

  10. When Quraysh sees him, its spokesman says:

    'Generosity reaches its utmost in this man's noble virtues.'

  11. He lowers his gaze in modesty, and eyes are lowered in awe of him;

    so he is spoken to only when he smiles.

  12. In his palm is a bamboo cane, its scent fragrant

    from the palm of a majestic man with a high-bridged nose.

  13. It almost holds him fast, in recognition of his palm—

    the corner of al-Hatim—when he comes to touch it.

  14. God honored him long ago and exalted him;

    the Pen inscribed that for him upon His Tablet.
