Though old age makes youth decline

Still some fire in him shines

Long has my soul at dawn replied

Though bleared my eyes that cloud should hide

I’ve been as eagle whom his might

Of nightly years did not alight

The pregnant camel though she tossed

At midmost cook a youngling lost

I lashed her flanks when past the line

On floats of standards clouds recline

I said “seek Bilal, he will yet

To wants of you bring sources wet”

I sware, and sware who sinn’d, his lot

Should be, when sin itself shall not,

If Bilal sends on me a shower

In happy augury from his right hand downpour

I’ll be as one who lightning wrath

Burnt his tilth land, no aftermath

Yet that land saved he did water

Till bloomed with growth from every quarter

A youth whose deeds excel in worth

The prime; in him war glories birth

Who by the sword enhanced the trail

When grinds the battle, of its flail

Bilal refused that both his hands

    Should vivify the thirsty lands

He was Mohammed’s clerk, and he

Wrote his commands for all to see

I saw when Bilal came and raced

And war before him vainly faced

By him the timorous were calmed, his rain

Gives life in every tribal domain

You poured despite who said “Refrain”

As from Al-Thurayya poured its rain

I travelled from the fortress brown

To you, and between jaclals renown

To find you; who finds you will know

    His hands with bounty overflow

Abu Musa trained you, as one trains

Colts on a pasture’s topmost plains

You are the Yemen garment, you

We don when war strikes, to ensue

A man who gives with open hand

    However hard your niggard band
