أَمسى لِتَغلِبَ مِن تَميمٍ شاعِرٌ

يَرمي القَبائِلَ بِالقَصيدِ الأَثقَلِ

The poet of Tamim triumphed in the evening

Assailing the tribes with his weightiest ode

إِذ غابَ كَعبُ بَني جُعَيلٍ عَنهُمُ

وَتَنَمَّرَ الشُعَراءُ بَعدَ الأَخطَلِ

When Ka'b son of Ju'ayl was lost to his people

And the poets all insolently jeered after Al-Akhtal

يَتَباشَرونَ بِمَوتِهِ وَوَراءَهُم

مِنّي لَهُم قِطَعُ العَذابِ المُرسَلِ

Exchanging the news of his death, with me behind them

Preparing for them a terrible chastisement
