If you were to meet the one whose epithet you bear,

And there emerged from you, O father of cubs, radiance,

O son of caliphs, verily the horses have known

When they were roused against their champions,

That you are the first of them in stabbing, and the most skillful

Behind the heavily-armed, when they moaned,

And [you are] enduring, through you, were it not for what your hands wrought

Against the horses and champions, [he] would not have endured,

Indeed, al-Walid, Abul 'Abbas, bequeathed to him

Of the noble traits, including innate excellence,

And a palm like the basin of a well, copiously watered,

Which drives away from the one who comes to it hunger and leanness,

Hollow in the shin, filled, garlanded

With the waterbag straps - you see around it turbidity

From the men and youths who have been carried

Girt, and not girt like the mindless camels.

Both of them sated, its comers and goers,

The petitioners to it and the early risers to it.

Verily, generosity is the companion of al-'Abbas - he allied himself to it

And munificence - they are brothers who have drowned mankind in freshness

Hastening with their hands benevolence to its obtainer

Which the mornings and munificence never flag.

Verily we have come to you when there settled upon our land

From the years, ailments that split the rocks,

Seeking you as the rain is sought when it falls,

Its harbinger with life by which he enlivens the trees,

Verily us and you are like the bucket which fell

Into the hands of one drawing water, who praised, and was unaware,

Of one drawing who did not find a bucket and lowered it

Upon him except from praise which appeared.

O son of al-Walid, do not the people know

That you and the sword are submission for whoever disbelieved?
