1. أَعَضَّ حُمَيٌّ ساقَهُ السَيفَ بَعدَما

    رَأى المَوتَ يَغشى واسِطَ الرَحلِ راكِبُه

    A gallant horse bit the sword after

    Seeing death overwhelm the rider's saddlecloth

  2. وَوَاللَهِ ما أَدري أَجُبنٌ بِجَندَلٍ

    عَنِ العودِ أَم أَعيَت عَلَيهِ مَضارِبُه

    By Allah I know not if out of cowardice with sandalwood

    It avoided the lance or if its blows failed upon it

  3. كِلا السَيفِ وَالعَظمِ الَّذي ضَرَبا بِهِ

    إِذا اِلتَقَيا في الساقِ أَوهاهُ صاحِبُه

    Either the sword or the bone it struck with

    When they met on the shinbone - Alas for its rider!
