مَنَعَ الحَياةَ مِنَ الرِجالِ وَطيبَها
حَدَقٌ يُقَلِّبُها النِساءُ مِراضُ
Life's sweetness is denied men by the eyes
That women turn, examining, upon them.
فَكَأَنَّ أَفئِدَةَ الرِجالِ إِذا رَأوا
حَدَقَ النِساءِ لِنَبلِها الأَغراضُ
Men's hearts, when they behold the languid eyes
Of women, for their glances bright, will yearn.
خَرَجَت إِلَيكَ وَلَم تَكُن خَرّاجَةً
فَأُصيبَ صَدعُ فُؤادِكَ المُنهاضُ
My heart went out to you, no tax collector;
Yet now its pieces lie there, split and burned.
