1. He took from her a glance as provision, which left him

    no heart; she did not know what he had taken.

  2. Never have I seen such a victim, nor a slayer

    unarmed like her, when she dealt a mortal blow.

  3. So unless she offers ransom or pays his blood-price, I see no

    avenger against her but the keen, Indian-forged sword.

  4. As though the Mashrafi swords set in nose-rings,

    when night is torn away from their necks,

  5. were lean camels of al-ʿAwhajī and Dāʿir stock,

    their footsore ones dragging hide-straps cut into strips,

  6. seeking their goals with riders on a distant journey,

    wading through a pitch-dark, black expanse of night.

  7. And nothing have the days and the famine year left—

    whose two fangs gnawed away the towering hump—

  8. for us; and he leads the walkers with the orphans

    to the shade of a cauldron he stoked when he lit the fire—

  9. a veteran of winters, who builds his fire high for guests

    when the miser muzzles his dog and quenches his flame.

  10. You inherited Ibn Harb, Ibn Marwan, and him

    through whom God aided the Prophet Muhammad.

  11. You see the wild beasts seek rain from him when they recognize him,

    bowing to him atop the ridges of the mounds.

  12. The goodness of your two hands, lavish in bounty, refuses,

    along with your kindly giving, to let you be unyielding

  13. in sparing blood or bestowing wealth through a gift

    that becomes life-giving rain for whoever settles in lowlands and ascends the highlands.

  14. And even if the prophets, men of wisdom, kept him company,

    they would see him, with his mighty kingship, as the acknowledged chief.
