1. May God not bless a people, nor may they drink

    Anything but bitter brine; they came to us from Sijistan,

  2. Hypocrites who deemed every indecency lawful;

    They were allies without fear of God.

  3. Was there no believer among them to warn them

    Of the punishment of a people who defied God?

  4. And how many peoples disobeyed God, and He destroyed them

    By wind, or by drowning in a flood of water!

  5. And why should a people whose leader is God's enemy,

    Who seek victory when they encounter Bahiman,

  6. Not be punished by my Lord and made

    A lesson to mankind, O Umm Hassan?

  7. In battle, you see their coats of mail firmly wrought,

    Of David's weaving—he gave them to Solomon.

  8. They shield them from battle's fury on battle's day, when they rode:

    Full-length mail like pools, with helmets and cuirasses.
