1. Indeed, your stealing my poems, Jarir,

is like claiming a father other than your own, as you keep shifting your claim.

  2. The son of al-Maragha claims descent from Darim,

as a slave may claim someone other than his father.

  3. The noble men will not grant you their father as yours,

until you are sent back to Atiyya, making excuses.

  4. You claimed that you were content with what was built for you;

then be patient, for you cannot exchange your father.

  5. And if you seek someone other than your father, you will surely return

to him as a slave, your nose like a boil.

  6. Your course was disgraced because your mother was

mated only with the base among the males.

  7. May God disfigure the place within her belly

from which you emerged, and in which you were carried.

  8. And when you weep for Umama, listen

to words that speak broadly and, at times, make fine distinctions.

  9. Did you ask me about my place of honor and what became of it?

Then ask about my story and about what you seek to know.

  10. For baseness prevents you and yours from taking an honored seat,

while honor protects my place; it will not be undone.

  11. God has established it, along with an honor that has remained

firmly rooted and, by your father, does not change.

  12. My mountain is stronger when wars break open

than what your parents built for you, and finer.

  13. I have risen above you over every mountain pass,

and stood high above Banu Kulayb.

  14. Why did you not ask Banu Ghudana what they saw

where the she-ass was saddled at your tent pole?

  15. The she-ass broke your front tooth; the evidence

of her is clear in your mouth for all to see.
