1. So God gave in return a shade, with leaves above it,

    from it, through your two hands, with finery and fruit within.

  2. Nor were they restored to them until you came to them—

    Marwan's days, when white blazes shone among their wild beasts.

  3. So they found that God had restored their prosperity,

    for they are Quraysh, and no mortals are their equals.

  4. And when they swear by God, their oath-taker

    says, 'No, by Him from whose bounty comes Umar

  5. to Quraysh when they settled and were bitten

    by time and the fangs of days that leave their mark.'

  6. No calamity from the days has struck

    at the root but it will be mended, however grave.

  7. And you have been praised for virtues by which you were tested;

    and only one's reputation, O son of Layla, is praised.

  8. I recognize a generosity drawn from Marwan's bounty,

    while spear-thrusts slant into the horses' shoulders.

  9. And a bounty of the son of Layla—were it contained

    by the Euphrates' torrent, that torrent would seem paltry.

  10. And whenever the family of Abu al-Asi grew angry,

    they would not unravel cords once firmly twisted.

  11. Their far-reaching hands forbid them this, as does their

    glory in the contest whenever the stakes are raised.

  12. If they punish, death is part of their punishment;

    and if they pardon, they are men of forbearance when they have power.

  13. They seek no recompense for their favors once bestowed,

    and their bounty contains neither reproach nor taint.

  14. How many a plot God has scattered and gathered together

    through them, and how many a sparking fire He has quenched!

  15. And there will always be a leader from among them, a king,

    toward whom the gaze rises, above the pulpit.
