1. And Tamim settled in its Dahna and sought refuge

in fertile Barni-date country, with abundant date supplies.

  2. To one seeking provisions from them, they seem like

a camel-driver's Bactrian camels, his great beasts lean.

  3. And had Abs not fought, it would have been struck

by hunger's anguish, whose sleepless sufferer cannot close his eyes.

  4. But they overpower their enemy

when its war-kindlers brandish the spearheads.

  5. Behold, every affair, O son of Marwan, is lost

unless its twisted cords lie in your two palms.

and among them are the claimant to the wronged man's blood and his avenger.

  11. And why are they not aided, when among them is

the chosen Prophet's close friend and fellow emigrant?

  12. Kings, to whom belongs the inheritance of every counsel;

and, by God, among them are the folder and unfolder of affairs.

  13. And how many mantles of scorching heat we have worn

on our way to you, and nights whose enclosures shroud us,

  14. to reach the best of men, if they bring us there—

swift-striding camels, ceaselessly assailing the wide desert.

  15. When night envelops them, their saddles become

our lodgings, until its sparrows cry out.

  16. So only in their stout-bodied camels did there remain

any marrow—only its remnants in the small joint-bones.
