1. O tyranny, depravity, and arrogance!

    O deception from which even wickedness recoils!

  2. O ingratitude, O favoritism among my people!

    O hearts wherein aversion creeps!

  3. O strife, O abominations of my country!

    O hypocrisy, O baseness, O debauchery!

  4. Come as close as you can to my soul’s grandeur;

    my breast is spacious, and my heart is great.

  5. I have a soul like the sea, vast enough

    that both pure essence and husks are cast into it.

  6. It spits out filth through chastity and purity,

    while pearls remain within it and sink deep.

  7. Do not let my stillness deceive you:

    my silence points toward a revolution.

  8. Be wary when you hear my sigh,

    for the sigh within my breast is a roar.

  9. Come closer, closer—for the pains of my soul

    are an ember from which the blaze leaps up;

  10. an ember in its volcano, fiercely burning,

    while the ages stare toward its flames.

  11. My country, enough of mocking my soul!

    My soul is your sharpened sword.

  12. Do not say that afflictions have burned it—

    every soul that has not burned gives no light.

  13. Leave me to sing the songs of my love;

    I take pride in love and song.

  14. My poetry will outlive the crown,

    for that crown is destined to vanish.

  15. How many princes and kings have disappeared,

    enfolded by darkness and graves!

  16. Yet the blind al-Maʿarri remains alive,

    though poor indeed was the blind al-Maʿarri.

  17. O souls in which valor has grown,

    where does your renowned sword now shelter?

  18. Neither forbearance nor gentleness avails

    against souls whose watchword is destruction.

  19. Glory was created for the capable—so strive!

    Only the capable attain advancement.

  20. Come drink of knowledge: knowledge is light;

    shake off ignorance—there is no light in ignorance.

  21. This soil that brought you into being

    has been ravaged by a hireling lord.

  22. Shake it free, for gold lies in its earth,

    and your wealth is its hoarded gold.

  23. What shall we answer our children if they ask us:

    What land did you illumine, O full moons?

  24. What shame have you left to fledglings

    whom abasement covets, O eagles?

  25. Can we endure life while we are old men

    with honor and feeling still in our breasts—

  26. helpless, with no champion to ward away

    what we suffer? What champion have sins?

  27. O dawn, lamp of all creation,

    how strange that you visit every day!

  28. How have you not wearied of this partial world?

    Or are you, like it, wicked too?

  29. On what day will the oils of your light gutter out,

    and you rebel against the ordained course of radiance,

  30. casting existence into darknesses

    where pitch-black night rules, tyrant in its cloak?

  31. This existence has grown old,

    and perilous existence has grown wretched.

  32. Within it, the character of men has worn threadbare;

    lofty impulses and conscience have worn threadbare.

  33. Nothing remains in it but deception and falsehood,

    and its afflictions too are deception and falsehood.

  34. The billy goat has succeeded a mighty lion—

    woe to a goat through whose reign the lion sleeps!

  35. In vain do we hope for integrity unless

    the veils are torn away from hypocrisy.

  36. We have long abided by ignorance,

    but the clear-sighted cannot abide by ignorance.

  37. Are we not heirs to the most ancient glory,

    its clash and ringing still within our hands?

  38. Are we not heirs to a people by whose teachings

    the guides illuminated the ages?

  39. They worshiped art in all its radiance; we worship

    absurdities whose emblem is wastefulness.

  40. Nothing of art remains to us but

    memories—the final struggle.

  41. The land was once a nation, but has become

    a nation that knows not with whom to seek refuge.

  42. The rich man tyrannizes there and all

    humanity turns blind to him, while the poor suffer.

  43. Across its heights and along its coasts there flows

    pure water from the veins of our forefathers.

  44. So bow to the ether within it, and pray:

    this ether is the very breath of the ancestors.
