1. مُلِّيَ النورَ قَبلَ عَهدِ البُدورِ

    فَهوَ شطرٌ مِنَ الضِياءِ الكَبيرِ

    He shed light before the era of full moons

    So he is a ray of the great illumination

  2. أَطلَعَ اللَهُ في الحَياةِ رِجالاً

    غَمَروا لُجَّةَ الظَلامِ بِنورِ

    God sent in life men

    Who flooded the darkness with light

  3. هُم بُدورُ الأَجيالِ هُمُ شُعراءُ ال

    أَرضِ هُم كَهرَباءُ هذا الأَثيرِ

    They are the full moons of generations, the poets of

    The earth, the electricity of this universe

  4. كُلَّما ذَرَ شاعِرٌ في سَماءٍ

    شَعَرَ اللَيلُ بِاِنقِلابٍ خَطيرِ

    Whenever a poet scattered in a sky

    The night felt a dangerous upheaval

  5. إِنَّما الشاعِرُ الحَقيقِيُّ يَشقى

    بمُجاجاتِ زَيتِهِ المَنذورِ

    The true poet really suffers

    With the disturbances of his spilled oil

  6. كَالمَناراتِ تَبعَثُ النورَ فياللي

    لِ وَتَشقى في الشاطىءِ المَهجورِ

    Like lighthouses emitting light at night

    And suffering on the deserted beach

  7. أَو دُخان مِنَ المَجامِرِ يَرقى

    حامِلاً لِلنُفوسِ عِطرَ البَخورِ

    Or smoke rising from censers

    Carrying the souls the scent of incense

  8. هُوَ مِن نَزوَةِ النُبوغِ أَذانٌ

    أَن يَرى البُؤسُ شُعلَةً في الصُدورِ

    He is from the whim of genius a minaret

    To see misery as a flame in breasts

  9. وَقَضاءٌ لِلعَبقَرِيَّةِ أَلّا

    يَبسِمَ المَجدُ في جَناحِ النُسورِ

    And the destiny of genius that

    Glory does not smile in the wing of eagles

  10. هكَذا الحِكمَةُ الخَفِيَّةُ شاءَت

    فَهيَ تُخفي أَقباسَها في الضَميرِ

    That is how the hidden wisdom willed

    It hides its embers in conscience

  11. تَمنَعُ النورَ عَن عُيونِ السلاطِ

    ينِ وَتُعطيهِ لِلعَرّي الضَريرِ

    Denying light to the eyes of sultans

    And gives it to the blind beggar

  12. أَوحَشَ الرَوضُ في الخَريفِ فَلا تَس

    معُ فيهِ أُغرودَةً لِلطُيورِ

    The garden withered in autumn, hearing no more

    The warbling of birds in it

  13. وَالزُهورُ الَّتي تَنَشَّقتَ رَيّا

    ها تَخَلَّت عَن خِدرِها لِلصُحورِ

    The flowers whose petals cracked off

    Shed their blossoms to the rocks

  14. وَسُقوطُ الأَوراقِ يَسلَخُ في الفَج

    رِ بَقايا الآمالِ في المَصدورِ

    And falling leaves peel in the crevices

    Remains of hopes in breasts

  15. أَينَ تِلكَ الزُهورُ يَنفَرِطُ الصَب

    حُ عَلَيها بِاللُؤلُؤِ المَنشورِ

    Where are those flowers that morning sprinkles

    With scattered pearls over them?

  16. يَذبُلُ الزَهرُ في الخَريفِ وَيُنقي

    لِبُذورِ الرَبيعِ بَعضَ عُطورِ

    The flower withers in autumn and transfers

    To spring seeds some of its fragrances

  17. هكَذا الشاعِرُ المُحَلِّقُ إِذ يَم

    ضي وَتَبقى آثارُهُ لِلدُهورِ

    So is the soaring poet when he passes away

    And his works remain for ages

  18. لَم يَمُت شاعِرُ اللَيالي فَعَينا

    هُ تَشعّانِ في الكِتابِ الصَغيرِ

    The poet of nights did not die, his two eyes

    Shining in the little book

  19. رُبَّ سِفرٍ أَضاسَ هَيكَلَ نورٍ

    خَلَدَت فيهِ مُقلَتا شِكسبيرِ

    Many a book laid the structure of a temple of light

    Where the glance of Shakespeare was immortalized

  20. رُبَّ سِفرٍ مَحا قُصورَ الدهاقي

    نِ وَأَعلى بِالمَجدِ كوخَ الفَقيرِ

    Many a book erased the palaces of the vain

    And raised the hut of the poor with glory

  21. لا يَموتُ الفَيّاضُ وَالشِعرُ حَيٌّ

    وَعَلى البُؤسِ بَسمَةٌ لِلثُغورِ

    The generous does not die as long as

    There is a smile for mouths on breasts

  22. وَعَلى مَحجَرِ اليَتيمِ مِنَ القَلبِ

    دِماءٌ مَحمومَةٌ بِالزَفيرِ

    And on the orphan's eyebrow from the heart

    Blood throbbing with sighing

  23. وقُلوبُ الشَبابِ تَنبِضُ لِلحُ

    بِّ وَتَأوي إِلى عَذارى الخُدورِ

    And youths' hearts pulsating with love

    And harboring the damsels of breasts

  24. لا يَموتُ الفَيّاضُ ما دامَت الأَر

    واحُ تَهتَزُّ لاِختِلاجِ الصَريرِ

    The generous does not die as long as

    Souls shiver from the convulsion of purring

  25. وَجَمالُ الأَفكارِ مِن مُحرِقاتِ ال

    قَلبِ يَمتَدُّ في شُعاعٍ طَهورِ

    And the beauty of ideas from the crucibles of

    The heart stretches in a beam of purity

  26. وَالسَماعُ الطافي عَلى وَتَرِ الشِع

    رِ يُشيرُ الهَوى بِمُردٍ وَحورِ

    And the fleeting hearing on the string of poetry

    Gestures love with refrain and delight

  27. يا خَيالاً في الصُبحِ خَدَّرَ أَجفا

    ني وَنوراً في اللَيلِ كانَ سَميري

    O imagination that narcotized my eyelids at dawn

    And was my light at night

  28. قُل لَهُم أَستَريحُ في قُصرِيَ المَم

    لوكِ مِن بُؤسِ بَيتيَ المَأجورِ

    Tell them I rest in my royal palace

    From the misery of my rented house

  29. رَبحَ السَيفُ فانِياتِ القَضايا

    وَمَلَكتُ العُلى بِبَعضِ سُطورِ

    The sword won the ephemeral matters

    And I owned the sublime with some lines

  30. مَلَكٌ في جُجُنَّتي يَتَمَنّى

    مَبسِمُ الفَجرِ لَو يَكونُ سَفيري

    A king in my small jar who wishes

    The smile of dawn would be my envoy

  31. دَولَتي بِالخُلودِ نيطَت لِأَنّي

    لَم أَشِدها بِالعاجِ وَالبِرفيرِ

    My eternal state tied not with ivory and silk

    Rather I did not adorn it with embellishments and ornaments

  32. قُل لَهُم نِمتُ في الحَياةِ عَلى الشَو

    كِ مِراراً وَمَرَّةً في سَريري

    Tell them I often slept in life

    Miserably once on my bed

  33. إِنَّ مَوتي عَلى الربابِ رُقادٌ

    يَنتَهي بي إِلى صَباحٍ مُنيرِ

    That my death on the neck of my guitar is a slumber

    Which takes me to a bright morning

  34. يَرقُدُ الشاعِرُ الكَبيرُ مِراراً

    إِنَّما السِرُّ في الرِقادِ الأَخيرِ

    The great poet sleeps repeatedly

    The secret lies in the final sleep

  35. قُل لَهُم تَحطِمونَ في الأَرضِ كَأسي

    وَبِمَوتي تُقَدِّسونَ خُموري

    Tell them you smash my cup on earth

    And sanctify my wines at my death

  36. عَقَّ زَهري الوَرى وَقَد يَتَمَنّى

    قَطرَةً لِلنُّفوسِ مِن إِكسيري

    The people denied my flower but may wish

    A drop for the souls from my elixir

  37. زَهَرُ المَجدِ لا يُفَتَّحُ لِلشّ

    اعِرِ إِلّا عَلى ضِفافِ القُبورِ

    The flower of glory only opens to the poet

    On the banks of graves

  38. نَم قَريراً فَسَوفَ يَأتي صَباحٌ

    يَمهُدُ الروحُ لاِنقِلابٍ كَبيرِ

    Sleep peacefully, a morning will come

    Where the soul paves for a great change

  39. وَغُصونُ الخَريفِ لا بُدَّ أَن تُم

    سي غُصونَ الرَبيعِ بَعدَ شُهورِ

    Autumn branches must touch

    Spring branches after months
