How great was my need one day for an ear
Deaf to all but the beloved, the source of solace,
So the voice of a wailing woman does not split my head,
Nor the groan of the wretched tear my heart to shreds,
So that pretenders do not embitter my soul, nor
The slandering of the virtuous by the vile and vicious.
I say this, hoping a free spirit might say with me:
How great is the need of some people to be mute!
