A bee alighted upon the chamomile,

And behold, in the hive there is honey.

Then a worm crawled upon the branches,

Leaving the boughs stripped and bare.

The rain poured down upon the fields, and therein

    Rose lush trees and flowers.

It struck the sands in order to revive them,

But they remained a corpse and a grave.

I am the rain; so if I find you a fertile field,

Then I am the grass and the trees.

But if I encounter you as barren sand,

I am nothing, not even the rain.

And I am the chamomile; it is all the same to me

Whether I live a single day or part of a day.

I heed not annihilation if my glory lies

In my fading, or serves the glory of my people.

If my colors disappear into a butterfly,

Then I exist within a flower that flies.

And if my being dissolves into a sunbeam,

Then I am fragrance in the morning light.

Spare me from perishing within the worms,

    For that is a loathsome demise;

It is the extinction of scent and hues,

An oblivion in which there is no glory.

Be a beam of light wherein my essence is revealed,

    Not darkness, nor lifeless dust.

And let me live within the beam for a few seconds,

For that is better than a thousand years.
