سَمِعَ اللَيلُ ذو النُجومِ أَنيناً

وَهوَ يَغشى المَدينَةَ البَيضاءَ

The starry night heard a deep moan

As it blanketed the white city;

فَاِنحَنى فَوقَها كَمُستَرِقِ الهَمـ

ـسِ يُطيلُ السُكوتَ وَالإِصغاءَ

It bent over it like an eavesdropper,

Prolonging the silence to listen closely.

فَرَأى أَهلَها نِياماً كَأَهلِ الـ

ـكَهفِ لا جَلبَةً وَلا ضَوضاءَ

It saw its people sleeping like the Companions of the Cave,

With neither clamor nor commotion.

وَرَأى السَدَّ خَلفَها مُحكَمَ البُنـ

ـيانِ وَالماءَ يُشبِهُ الصَحراءَ

And it saw the dam behind it, a sturdy structure,

With water that stretched out like a desert.

كانَ ذاكَ الأَنينُ مِن حَجَرٍ في الـ

ـسَدِّ يَشكو المَقادِرَ العَمياءَ

That moan came from a stone within the dam,

Lamenting its blind destiny.

أَيُّ شَأنٍ يَقولُ في الكَونِ شَأني

لَستُ شَيئاً فيهِ وَلَستُ هَباءَ

"What purpose," it said, "is mine in this universe?

I am neither something of note nor mere dust.

لا رُخامٌ أَنا فَأَنحَتُ تِمثا

لاً وَلا صَخرَةٌ تَكونُ بِناءَ

I am not marble to be sculpted into a statue,

Nor a rock to serve as a building block.

لَستُ أَرضاً فَأَرشُفُ الماءَ

أَو ماءً فَأَروي الحَدائِقَ الغَنّاءَ

I am not soil to sip the water,

Nor water to irrigate lush gardens.

وَلَستُ دُرّاً تُنافِسُ الغادَةُ الحَس

ناءُ فيهِ المَليحَةَ الحَسناءَ

I am not a pearl for which a fair maiden

Competes with another beauty.

لا أَنا دَمعَةٌ وَلا أَنا عَينٌ

لَستُ خالاً أَو وَجنَةً حَمراءَ

I am neither a tear nor an eye,

I am neither a beauty mark nor a blushing cheek.

حَجَرٌ أَغبَرٌ أَنا وَحَقيرٌ

لا جَمالاً لا حِكمَةً لا مَضاءَ

I am but a dusty, insignificant stone,

Possessing no beauty, no wisdom, no resolve.

فَلأُغادِر هَذا الوُجودَ وَأَمضي

بِسَلامٍ إِنّي كَرِهتُ البَقاءَ

So let me depart this existence and pass on

In peace, for I have grown to loathe remaining here."

وَهَوى مِن مَكانِهِ وَهوَ يَشكو الـأ

رضَ وَالشُهبَ وَالدُجى وَالسَماءَ

It fell from its place, complaining of the earth,

Of the stars, the darkness, and the sky.

فَتَحَ الفَجرُ جَفنَهُ فَإِذا الطو

فانُ يَغشى المَدينَةَ البَيضاءَ

Dawn opened its eyelid to find the flood

Engulfing the white city.
