What gift on Eid shall I present to you
What gift shall I offer you on this feast day,
My angel, though you have everything
O my angel, when you already possess everything?
Bracelets, or a necklace of fresh pearls
A bracelet, or an armlet of pure gold?
I do not like shackles around your wrists
But I despise the sight of chains upon your wrists.
Wine, though no wine on earth compares
Or wine? Yet there is no vintage on earth
To that which you pour from your glances
To compare with that which you pour from your gaze.
Or roses, the loveliest rose for me
Or roses? When to me the fairest rose
Is the one I plucked from your cheek
Is the fragrance I have inhaled from your cheeks.
Or carnelian, like my passion aflame
Or carnelian, burning like my heart's blood?
Carnelian most precious on your lips
Yet the most precious carnelian lies within your lips.
I have nothing more precious than my soul
I possess nothing more dear than my soul,
My playful soul held in your hands
And my soul is already held captive in your hands.
