We bear the Russians no ill will, yet we do not love them,
We bear no hate for the Russ, though we love them not,
For ours is a war of peers against peers.
For our war is a war of equals against equals.
Nor are the French truly hostile to us,
Nor the French; they are not true foes to us,
But they are not comrades or brothers.
Though neither are they friends nor brethren.
We engage with them blow for blow,
We exchange with them, while the battle-dust hangs low,
Stab for stab, fire for fire.
Thrust for thrust and fire for fire.
Our proud banners wave among the regiments,
Here are our banners fluttering in the regiment,
And our victorious army on every battlefield.
And our army stands victorious in every field.
Our hearts contain naught but the glowing embers
Our hearts hold nothing but a single wrath,
Of elders and the live coals of youth alike.
Wherein the grey-haired elder and the dark-haired youth are one.
As a mass beyond count we share one passion,
We love as one, though we are countless multitudes,
And so we are martyred as one, as men.
And as one man, we loathe with a single soul.
Our sole enemy, whom all recognize,
Our enemy is but one; he is known to all,
Is that envious wicked schemer who does ill.
That envious, malicious, cunning slanderer.
Against him surging breakers are our haven
Waves separate us from him, in which he takes refuge,
Of refuge, massive as the barren, scorching dunes.
Thick as dried gore, dark and deep.
I see him taking cover amid the deluge,
I see him there, hiding within the deluge,
A flood of wrath concealed behind a flood.
A flood of rage concealed behind a flood of water.
The water now preserves and protects him -
The water has come to protect and defend him—
Woe to the water because of us, for it has sided with the foe!
Woe be to the water from us, for it shares the crime!
Stand, all of you, before the seat of justice
Stand, all of you, before the bar of just decree,
And solemnly swear a harsh unbending oath,
And let every German swear a solemn oath.
Rigid as steel, inexorable as death,
An oath unyielding as solid steel, severe,
To endure for ages and aeons of time:
Enduring like death through ages and eras.
That we will harbor a hatred that does not wane,
To hate with a hatred whose fibers never fray,
Immeasurable, beyond reckoning,
A hate unmeasured, uncountable by any scale.
That we will voice it everywhere,
To echo it in every quarter and corner,
Repeat it like a refrain,
And repeat it as one repeats a chanting hymn.
And teach it to every heart and mind
To teach every living soul among us,
To hate these people both secretly and openly,
To hate that people in secret and in open view.
A hatred handed down to our descendants
A hatred passed down as an heirloom to our kin,
And from one generation to the next.
Moving among them from one generation to the next.
Our sole enemy, whom all recognize,
Our enemy is but one; he is known to all,
Is that envious wicked schemer who does ill.
That envious, malicious, cunning slanderer.
Hark, O Germans, and understand,
Listen, O Germans, and take heed,
For you are people of intellect and wisdom:
For you are a people of intellect and mind.
Your commanders all convened as one,
In a council, all the commanders sat convened,
Bound fast like well-knotted rope or mortared brick.
Firm as a tightened knot or a cemented wall.
One of them rose, a cup held in his hand,
And one of them rose, a chalice in his hand,
As though it were a torch or a wrathful eye.
Blazing like a firebrand or a wrathful eye.
He spoke: "O people, this is the secret of your day.
He said: 'O people, this is the secret of your day,
Come, drink! for the secret of the day is two secrets."
Drink deep, for the day's secret is twofold.'
His utterance, spoken to the assembly, had its effect,
A speech that worked its magic on the crowd,
And they became as though they were one man, not two.
Until they merged, as if one spirit became two.
No striking sword, no leaping spark of flame,
Neither the sword-stroke of a mighty hero,
No speeding ship, no shooting star, no diving lightning bolt,
Nor the sparks flying from a heart of flint,
Is swifter or more forceful than it,
Nor the ship coursing through the tide,
Emerging from his mouth like an arrow from the quiver.
Nor the meteor plunging in pursuit of a fiend,
It illuminated whoever was in the cup that was raised on high
Were sharper or more piercing than those words,
By that speaker who intended and meant it.
Shot from his mouth like an arrow from a singing bow.
O children of Britain, rally your masses
It illuminated the contents of the raised cup,
And summon mankind, human or jinn!
And revealed whom the fervent speaker meant.
Build your fortresses and ramparts with gold
O sons of Britannia, call forth your multitudes,
And hire armies of whites and blacks!
And summon the creatures of earth, both men and Jinn.
Patrol your fleets in the sea lying in wait for us,
Build your fortresses and ramparts out of gold,
Churning the waves and tracking the whales!
And hire your mercenaries, white and black.
By God! None of this will hinder or turn back
Order your fleets to lie in wait at sea,
A hand once outstretched in anger to smash and demolish.
Blocking the ocean against both wave and whale.
We bear the Russians no ill will, yet we do not love them,
By God, neither this nor that shall stay a hand
For ours is a war of peers against peers.
That, when it strikes, crushes the building and the builder.
Nor are the French truly hostile to us,
We bear no hate for the Russ, though we love them not,
But they are not comrades or brothers.
For our war is a war of equals against equals.

Nor the French; they are not true foes to us,
Stab for stab, fire for fire.
Though neither are they friends nor brethren.
We attack and are attacked, with hatred ever present
We exchange with them, while the battle-dust hangs low,
And every vicious, deadly, piercing weapon.
Thrust for thrust and fire for fire.
But what tomorrow will bring is peace
We advance and they advance, while war rages on,
Veiling this tumult, covering them with forgetfulness.
With every sharp blade, lethal weapon, and spear.
Every hatred will be erased but hatred of you,
But tomorrow, Peace shall cast its veil
For it is safe from diminution.
Over this war, and drape them in oblivion.
The hearts' loathing of you will never fade, even if
And all hatred shall fade away, save for hatred of you,
We and you should pass away and the transient world should vanish.
For that hate is safe from all diminish.
Your remoteness on earth and the distance of the stars in heaven
The hatred in our hearts for you shall not cease,
Are alike, and so is hatred in free and bound souls.
Even if you perish, and we perish, and the fleeting world dissolves.
The cottage hates you, and the palace hates you,
On the earth and on the water, the measure is the same,
And every heart and mind among us.
And the hatred in the free man equals that of the captive.
As a mass beyond count we share one passion,
The humble hut hates you, and the palace hates you,
And so we are martyred as one, as men.
And every one of us possessing life and feeling.
Our sole enemy, whom all recognize,
We love as one, though we are countless multitudes,
Is that envious wicked schemer who does ill.
And as one man, we loathe with a single soul.

That envious, malicious, cunning slanderer.
