The land of peace and the country of bliss
Abode of Peace and land of bliss,
It is hard for God that we grieve
It weighs upon all that you should grieve.
So the cause of Palestine is a supreme cause
The affliction of Palestine is the affliction of the high,
And the provision of the Supreme was not easy
And the calamity of the noble was never slight.
We stayed up night for it as if swords
We kept vigil for it, as though swords
Were slicing through our livers here
Were slicing through our vitals right here.
And how can the planets please eyes
How can slumber visit eyes
That see around it eyes of misfortune?
That see the eyes of death staring all around?
And how can life be pleasant for people
How can life be sweet for a people
Whose paths to wishes are blocked?
Against whom the paths of hope are barred?
Their country exposed to loss
Their lands are exposed to loss,
And their nation exposed to oblivion
And their nation exposed to annihilation.
The Jews want to crucify it
The Jews desire to crucify her,
Yet Palestine refuses to surrender
But Palestine refuses to submit.
The woman refuses among her folk
The honor within her people refuses,
The swords refuse and the spears refuse
As do the swords and the spears.
The land of imagination and its signs
O land of imagination and its miracles,
And the owner of majesty and glory
Possessor of majesty and possessor of light.
Does it become for their riffraff a theater
Do you become a stage for their mobs,
And get for their rabble an ambush?
And turn into a hideout for their outcasts?
By my soul, its Jordan and those who dwelt
My soul be ransomed for her fresh Jordan waters,
That Jordan yesterday defended the sanctuary
And for those who neighbor that Jordan.
So their wars were a fleeing refuge
They defended the sanctuary yesterday,
And they gave all they had
And their wars were truly our wars.
And we will give all we have
They gave generously of all they possessed,
So say to the Jews and their dispersal
And we shall sacrifice what we possess.
Verily the flares of glory have fooled you
So say to the Jews and their partisans:
If only Balfour gave you a country that is not ours
The flashes of false lightning have deceived you.
We are more spacious than our Jerusalem
Would that Balfour had given you
And you are more beloved to London
A land of his own, not a land of ours.
And gave you a homeland in the stars
For London is more spacious than our Jerusalem,
No Arab wishes those abodes
And you are more beloved to London.
Does your nation rob them of their rationality
He tantalized you with a homeland in the stars,
And calls them benevolent?
For there is no Arab in those worlds.
And delivers the innocent to death
Does he rob your people of their reason,
And a group counts it as religious?
That your people call him a benefactor?
And wonder at you, charging
He pushes the innocent toward death,
The Arabs with inability and stupidity
Yet a faction considers him righteous?
Insulting them with ugly speech
How strange of you to incite against the Arabs
When they deserved friendly praise
The Thames and the Hudson.
And all their sins are that they
You cast ugly words upon them,
Say "Do not violate our home"
When they were more deserving of abundant praise.
For Palestine is not common land
And all their sins are that they say:
To be given to whoever wants to reside
Do not violate our home.
So if you want it with the flames of spears
For Palestine is not a common pasture,
We will repel you with the lengths of spears
To be given to whoever wishes to settle.
For in the Arab are human traits
If you seek her with tawny spears,
Other than fear and cowardice
We will repel you with long lances.
And if you mix deceit between us
For in the Arab are the traits of all mankind,
You will not deceive a believing man
Except for fear and cowardice.
And if you boycott it, that is better
Though you dance among us with deceit,
For Palestine is a possession of ours
You will not deceive a man of faith.
It was for our ancestors before us
If you leave her, that is more fitting,
And remains for our descendants after us
For Palestine is a possession of ours.
You have without it riches
It belonged to our ancestors before us,
While we have without it no riches
And shall remain for our grandchildren after us.
So do not account it as a homeland for you
You have sufficiency elsewhere,
For it was never a homeland for you
But we have no sufficiency but her.
What we want is not impossible
So do not reckon it a homeland for you,
And what you attempted is not possible
For never one day was it a homeland for you.
We advised you, so be rational and renounce
What we seek is not impossible,
Balfour, that pimp of yours
And what you desired is not possible.
Or else I advise you
We advised you, so desist and cast away
To carry shrouds with you
That foolish man, Balfour.
For we will make of its land
But if you refuse, then I advise you
A homeland for us and a grave for you
To carry your shrouds with you.
For we shall make of its earth
A homeland for us, and a graveyard for you.
