ما أَغدرَ الدنيا وليس لغَدْرِها

أَثَرٌ يُقصِّر من لَجاجِة طالبِ

Softly the world betrays, though betrayal

Leaves no mark to mar determined quest;

شَمْطاءُ تقتل بَعْلَها وفِعالها

مما يَزيد بها غَرامَ الخاطِب

A gaunt wanton slays alike her mate and deed,

And so but fans her suitor's flame unguessed
