1. A king has won the realm and brought relief to souls;

what a precious man has taken charge of a precious thing!

  2. And if his forefathers’ deeds were

full moons, he has spread suns among us.

  3. His gifts have granted our spirits,

through his kindness, blessings after misery.

  4. He revived souls and banished misery,

emptied prisons and swept away taxes.

  5. Safety spread, until there almost came alive

through it the crumbling remains that lie in tombs.

  6. O mercy, made to dwell throughout the land,

which turned to gardens, though once parched earth!

  7. You have won the hearts; as for your foes,

your good fortune hurls calamities upon them.

  8. If they harbor Pharaoh’s treachery against you,

your sword is like the staff in Moses’ hand.

  9. By your honor, O second of the two noblest men,

I swear an oath you shall find true, never perjured:

  10. You two have governed the realm among all peoples

and rendered any king incapable of ruling.

  11. Prepare your army for the two Easts,

and the two Wests, that you may range through them.

  12. For you are the Alexander of latter-day men—

but have you a Khidr to choose as your companion?
