1. جاء بلَوْزٍ أخضرِ

    أصغرُهُ مِلْءُ اليدِ

    He came bearing green almonds,

    the smallest of them filling a palm;

  2. كأنما زِئْبِرُه

    نَبْتُ عِذارِ الأمردِ

    as though their soft fuzz were

    down sprouting on a beardless youth’s cheek;

  3. كأنما قلوبه

    من تَوْءَمٍ ومفرد

    as though their kernels,

    whether twin or single,

  4. جواهرٌ لكنما ال

    أصدفُ من زبرجدِ

    were jewels—but their

    shells were of chrysolite.
