O songstress of the Two Palaces, from Marj Ḥannah—
weeping from the tamarisks amid a flock of mourning doves—
do you, I wonder, suffer what I suffer for a beloved I have lost,
whom she-camels spared by calamities bore away from me?
Whenever my soul remembers that beloved, my tears pour forth
over searing sighs that rise.
How many a night I held her close, while our bed was
sand cushions among the vineyards of al-Masāliḥ,
as the cool dew and its breeze enfolded us,
fondling us as a contented, forgiving one might.
And the east wind trailed the loose train of its mantle,
dew-damp over the carpets of fragrant gardens.
