Our loved ones in that land, after I left
I still see you, though we've long been apart
And though my home is far away from you
I remain constant in my ardour and passion
When a breeze blows from that place
I drink it in, sipping like blood from a wound
To feel Alexandria's exhilaration
Quenching the fire burning within my ribs
And I send to the South my warmest greetings
Have my words reached you over this distance?
God watered my days there with joy and rain
Like my tears for that life of ease long gone
How many visits there renewed my joy
Without waiting or promise, spontaneously
On that gulf were boats I sailed
Trailing youth and tenderness in their wake
When the winds roamed free, they conversed
Whispering to me of perfumed secrets
And its breeze wove above the water
An interlaced tale, complex as chainmail
Our nights were spent on the seashore
Strolling the sands between dune and hollow
Flirting with its gazelles, wild and untamed
Whose nature was hunting and capturing prey
The waves narrated their heavy burdens
At times hiding them, at times revealing
This water flows over that water
One tasting bitter, one sweeter than honey
When the current meets their surging tide
We see the wind's power on swaying reeds
Nights and days passed like glistening pearls
Scattered when the necklace snaps, link by link
