Greetings to both palaces from the dawn of youth

To the coast of the port overlooking the sea

Greetings to a man whom time has not deprived

Except that he refuses the pain in his chest

And tears, when their lids brim with water

Trickling, the red sunset flickers on the plain

I held back my words hoping with hesitation

When hope faded, my patience for it died

I lost my youth after family and home

Yet here I am, dead without a grave

He who leaves home seeking riches

If he gains wealth, tastes the bitterness of poverty

I recall the days of my youth

And a life devoid of care within my breast

Oh time, if only Layla were all

Like a night on the eastern shore from the coast

Oh night, what has passed beneath your wing

Of salt, that drips from the pot

A tale that if told to stone

Would make stony crags dance in turmoil

And tears of a flirt in tears of a young woman

As necklaces of carnelian spilled on pearls

And a plaint, as the breeze softly stirred a charm

Bringing tears of dew from the petals of flowers

They lined up furtively, from a reveler and onlooker

As the forbidden wine was poured in the goblet

No flaw in her, except her night visit

Came to a leader or guide at dawn’s first light
