1. لقيتُ في الحب ما لاقاه من هِممى

    فقَصْدُه ضدُّ ما تَرْضَى به شِيَمِي

    I found in love what none before me found,

    Its purpose contradicts my nature's bent.

  2. فليس يَظْهر حتى في تَمكُّنه

    إلا بلَحْظةِ عينٍ أو بقَوْلِ فم

    Though powerful it shows not but in a glance

    Of the eye or in a sudden word's consent.

  3. فخَلْوَتي ليس يرتاب الغيور بها

    مع التجني على المِسْواك واللُّثُم

    My privacy admits no jealous doubt,

    Despite my freedom with the toothbrush absent.

  4. ولست أَرضَى لمن اَهْوَى وإنْ رَضِيتْ

    طِباعُه بالذي يدعو إلى الندم

    I please not those whose love may yield regret

    Though their nature calls for mere present content.

  5. أَعَفُّ معْ ما أُلاقِي عند مقدرتي

    فلستُ فيه على أمرٍ بمتَّهم

    Gentle am I, though suffer at my might,

    No blame of me in this does evidence present.

  6. لوَأنّ وهمي أتى ما يُسْتَراب به

    في الطيفِ جَنَّبتُ عيني لذةَ الحُلُم

    And if my passion brought suspect on me

    From shades in dream, I'd veil mine eyes in sleep's tent.

  7. هَبِ المآثمَ لا تَخْشَى عَواقبَها

    نفسُ الفتى أين منه نخوة الكرم

    Go bravely where disasters start, nor dread

    What may befall, the youth's soul brooks no prevent.

  8. لولا نتائجُ ما تقِضى العقولُ به

    على النفوسِ لكانَ الناسُ كالنَّعَم

    But for the mind's decree that curbs the soul,

    All men would be like sheep without relent.

  9. إنْ لم تكن بوجودِ العيشِ مُجْتِلبا

    كَسْبَ الفضائلِ كان الفضلُ للعَدَم

    If you gain not virtue throughout your life,

    Then nothingness were better than life present.

  10. من لم يُفِدْ حكمةً أو يُستفادُ به

    فما لصورته فضلٌ على الصنم

    He helps not wisdom, nor profits by it, is

    No better than an idol resident.

  11. لولا المعاني التي يرجو الحياةَ لها

    ذوو النُّهَى كانتِ الأحياءُ كالرِّمَم

    But for the noble goals that make life prized,

    The living to the lifeless were equivalent.

  12. يَحْظَى اللبيبُ بما يَشْقى الجهولُ به

    كفاصدِ العرقِ يَبْغِى البُرْءِ بالألم

    The wise attain what makes the foolish mourn

    As the blood-letter finds his healing balm in torment.

  13. طِيبُ الثناءِ حياةٌ لا نَفادَ لها

    محروسةٌ من عَوادِى الشيبِ والهَرَم

    Fame's sweet praise grants everlasting life

    Immune from age and ruin's detriment.

  14. فانهضْ إذا كانتِ العَلياءُ ماثلةً

    أولا فقُمْ في تَرجِّيها على قَدَم

    Rise now, while high endeavors woo and call,

    Stand first, while others hesitate, negligent.

  15. فآفةُ المرءِ في كسبِ العُلى سببٌ

    من قوله سوف أو من قوله فكم

    In aspiring high, take no man's pedigree

    As help, work for yourself, despairing never, reticent.

  16. لا تتكل في تَرقِّيها على نسبٍ

    واعملْ لنفسِك واحذرْ خطةَ السَّأمِ

    I am the son of him whose mighty soul

    The world obeyed, of Arab and Ajam penitent.

  17. هذا ابنُ مَنْ دانتِ الدنيا لِهمَّتِه

    واستعبدَ الخلقَ من عُرْبٍ ومن عجم

    Noblest king, whose mighty justice grew

    To need no show of outward ornament.

  18. الأفضل الملك العَدْل الذي عَظُمتْ

    أَخْطارُه فهْي تستغنى عن العِظَم

    My hands hold kingship's reins, and kings are slaves

    To me, as is all time and circling firmament.

  19. هَذاكَ ملْكُ يديه والملوكُ له

    والدهرُ والفَلَك الجاري من الخدم

    With Allah's guidance, sword, and pen, he gained

    Empire of high and low by strength and wise temperament.

  20. لم يرضَ أنْ ملك العلياءَ أجمعَها

    حتى بَنى باللُّهَى والسيف والقلم

    Strong counsel, knowledge, patience, sacred aims,

    And providence - behold his government!

  21. والعزمِ والحزمِ والآراءِ صائبةً

    والعلمِ والحلمِ والتوفيقِ والشِّيَم

    Would you see all the world and who has reaped

    Its spoils, behold his palace and th' attendant

  22. إنْ شئتَ أنْ تبصرَ الدنيا ومن جَمَعتْ

    فانظرْ إلى بابِ دارِ المُلْك من أَمَم

    Seeing the monarchs' foreheads in the dust

    Prostrate, though loftiest in realm and parent.

  23. تُبصِرْ جِباهَ ملوكِ الأرضِ ساجِدةً

    على ثرىً هو فيها أشرفُ الذَّمم

    Dust that the stars of heaven themselves would give

    Their substance to be, and joy in ascent

  24. ثَرىً تَودُّ نجومُ الأفقِ لو جُعلتْ

    حَصْباءَهُ وعَلا منها على القمم

    O'er it to utmost height. A house Time's night

    And day alternate serving his commandment.

  25. دارٌ تدور الليالي عن أوامره

    فيها لمُحتَرَمٍ سامٍ ومجترِم

    Life there, and peace its visitors in refuge,

    Least of his gifts exceed whate'er is said in testament.

  26. هو الورى وهي الدنيا وساعتُها

    عُمْرٌ وزائرُها للأمن في حَرَم

    Gifts whose myriad bounty pleads his fame

    With less than others' scatter of Life's lent.

  27. أقلُّ ما أَسْأرتْ فيها مَواهبُه

    أضعافُ ما قيل في الأخبار عن إِرَم

    Suppose him Shahinshah, and yet no gift

    Were his, the world his life could not lament.

  28. مواهبٌ جمعتْ شملَ الثناءِ له

    ببعضِ ما فَرَّقت في الناس من نِعَم

    But that his might restored our weakened faith,

    drowned else in the torrent of the turbident.

  29. مَثِّلْ بوَهْمِك شاهِنْشاهَ واقترحِ ال

    جَدْوَى عليه وخُذْها غيرَ متهم

    His swords lit with his wrath give back in blood

    Our heroes, else disgraced in foul misjudgment.

  30. إن لم تَمُنَّ على الدنيا مَواهبُه

    بصَحْوةٍ غَرِقَتْ في سَيِله العَرِم

    When his decrees go forth, Time quails, and serves

    His every wish, like servant penitent.

  31. هذا على أن سَجْلا من صَوارِمه

    يُعيدها من طُلا الأعداءِ بحرَ دمِ

    The sphinx keeps trembling vigil in her fear,

    And Aesad crouch amid their scrunt entrenchment.

  32. صَوارمٌ أَضرمتْ فيها عَزائُمه

    نارا تعود بها الأبطالُ كالحُمَم

    In heaven the meteors, and afreets in gloom,

    The deep-sea monsters and the Jinn lie quiescent,

  33. عزائمٌ ما يَشيم الدهرُ وامِضَها

    إلا نَخوَّف منها خوفَ منتِقم

    How many powers' mighty onslaughts fell to him!

    How many sharp swords failed to make a dent!

  34. فما تمر بمَلْكٍ غيرِ مُنعفرٍ

    ولا تقابل جيشاً غير منهزمٍ

    Enthroned while kings stood fearful, armyless,

    You rose when prostrate foes arose, negligent.

  35. يخافُها القَدَرُ الجاري فتأمره

    بكلِّ ما تبتغيه أمرَ مُحتكِم

    Restored faith's fallen champion with your voice,

    Their ears deaf with fear, and senses violent.

  36. تَبيتُ من أجلها العَنْقاءُ خائفةً

    والعُصْمُ في النِّيق والآسادُ في الأجَم

    Till you revived its weakened soul, and mended

    Its broken will - investigator heaven-sent.

  37. والفُتْخ في الجو والنِّينان في لُجج

    والشُّهْب في أُفْقها والجِنُّ في الظُّلَم

    High traits are yours, as bounty is made perfect,

    While human gifts are frail and transient.

  38. كم صارعتْ من قُوىَ خَطْبٍ فما وَهَنتْ

    وصارعتْ من سَنا صعب فلم تَخِم

    To tell your virtues fully is denied me,

    And so I fear the critic negligent.

  39. جلستَ إذ قامتِ الأَملاكُ خائفةً

    وقُمتَ إذ قَعدتْ عجزا فلم تَقُم

    As vainly measuring ocean's waves in hollows,

    Or counting drops of rain in meadows pendant.

  40. لبَيَّتَ صارخَ دينِ اللهِ منتصِرا

    له وأَسماعُهم للخوفِ في صَمَم

    Vainly! - my describe falls short of you

    Despite its amplitude - the wise are negligent.

  41. حتى أعدتَ له روحَ الحياةِ وقد

    أودى بحدِّ اعتزامٍ غيرِ مُنثلِم

    If I cut short my poem, still the highest

    Is reached by blunted dart and bow unbent.

  42. مَناقبٌ خَصَّك الفضلُ العَميم بها

    وكلُّ ما لم يكن في الطبع لم يَدُم

    The noblest aim may still the heartland penetrate

    Shot from a fragile bow, and quiver empty spent.

  43. تكميلُ وصفِك بالإسهاب ممتنِعٌ

    ومرتجِى ذاك ممسوسٌ من اللَّمَم

    If fail I must, yet brevity's appropriate

    To wit - unlike prolixity, impermanent.

  44. كالمُبتغِى كَيْلَ ماءِ البحرِ في لُججٍ

    وحاسبِ القَطْرِ في مُستغزِر الدِّيَم

    The best speech is terse, satisfying sense,

    Not length, which counters wisdom, judgment's testament.

  45. هيهاتَ قَصَّرتِ الأوصافُ عنك مع ال

    إطنابِ فيك وحارتْ أعينُ الحَكَم

    May this year bless you, ushering in omens

    Of grace and life unlimited, magniloquent.

  46. إنِ اخْتَصرتُ قَريضي في المديحِ فقد

    يُنال سامي العُلَى بالباترِ الخذم

    A year whose tidings guarantee you years

    As countless as mankind's unspent inheritance.

  47. ويبلغُ النَّبْلُ للرامي على قِصَرٍ

    فيها أتمَّ المُنَى من أنفُسِ البُهُم

    Long life therein, and ever after, taste

    The sweet unending, as your fame circumambient.

  48. إنْ كان لا بدَّ من عجزِ المُطيل فلل

    تقَّصيرُ أَوْلَى بطبعِ الحاذق الفَهِم

  49. فأَحكمُ القولِ إيجازٌ يبين به ال

    معنى فإن طال زالتْ حِكمةُ الكَلِم

  50. فاسَعْد بعامِك واستقبلْ بَشائرَه

    في نعمةٍ وبقاءٍ غيرِ منُصرِم

  51. عامٌ يَعُمُّ ببُشراهُ التي نطقتْ

    بطولِ عمرك فيه سائرُ الأمم

  52. حَيِيتَ فيه وفي أمثاله أبداً

    طَيِّبَ الحياةِ على التَّأْبيد والقِدَم
