أَهلاً وَسَهلاً بِالمَشيبِ فَإِنَّهُ

سِمَةُ العَفيفِ وَحِليَةُ المُتَحَرِّجِ

Welcome and greetings to the grays, for it is

The mark of dignity and adornment of the virtuous one

وَكَأَنَّ شَيبي نَظمُ دُرٍّ زاهِرٍ

في تاجِ ذي مُلكٍ أَغَرَّ مُتَوَّجِ

My gray hair appears like strands of glowing pearls

In the crown of a king, more splendid than royalty

لا شَيءَ أَحسَنُ مِن مَشيبٍ وافِدٍ

بِالحِلمِ مُختَرِمِ الشَبابِ الأَهوَجِ

Nothing is finer than new grays arriving

With wisdom, having shed reckless youth

ضَيفٌ أَحَلَّ بي النُهى فَقَرَيتُهُ

رَفضَ الغَوايَةِ وَاِقتِصادَ المَنهَجِ

A guest who made me embrace temperance, so I hosted him

Rejecting wantonness, now on the path of moderation
