سَرى طَيفُ لَيلى حينَ آنَ هُبوبُ

وَقَضَّيتُ شَوقاً حينَ كادَ يَذوبُ

The phantom of Layla passed by when the winds blew,

And I fulfilled my longing when it almost melted away,

فَلَم أَرَ مَطروقاً يَحُلُّ بِطارِقٍ

وَلا طارِقاً يَقري المُنى وَيُثيبُ

Yet I didn't see an afflicted one finding relief in anything,

Nor an afflictor fulfilling wishes and giving rewards.
