لَم أَرَ صَفّاً مِثلَ صَفِّ الزُطِّ

تِسعينَ مِنهُم صُلِبوا في خَطِّ

I have not seen a row like the row of az-Zutt

Ninety of them were crucified in a line

كَأَنَّما غَمَّستَهُم في نَفطِ

مِن كُلِّ عالٍ جِذعُهُ بِالشَطِّ

As if you had dipped them in oil

Each lofty body is leaning to the side

كَأَنَّهُ في جِذعِهِ المُشتَطِّ

أَخو نُعاسٍ جَدَّ في التَمَطّي

As if in its leaning body

A brother of Na'as, serious in exertion

قَد خامَرَ النَومَ وَلَم يَغِطِّ

Sleep had overtaken him, and he did not sleep
