1. خودٌ من الترك قد صالت على العرب

    بسمهريٍّ فياللَه من عجب

    A beauty from the Turks has come to the Arabs

    With a radiant smile, by Allah what a wonder!

  2. وإن عجب من هذا تصول بهم

    بمشرفي لحاظٍ وهي في حجبِ

    And if you wonder at this, they ravage them

    With a glancing eye, while she is in seclusion

  3. جاءت بفراجة خضراء مشرقة

    كان اسمها خير خال صادق اللقب

    She came in a green dress, radiant

    Named Khair, truly named Sadiq

  4. تضمها فوق مياسٍ فتنت بهِ

    بابيض بدم العشاق منخضبِ

    Covering her with a cloak, alluring with it

    Dressed in white stained with the blood of lovers

  5. نقابها لم يفدها منع بارقةٍ من

    باسمٍ عن صحاح الدر والحببِ

    Her veil did not save her from a glittering smile

    From a beautiful face like a full moon

  6. ولم يصد لثامٌ السحر مقلتها

    ولا الغلائل فعل الأملد الرطب

    Nor did the veil of magic block her eyelashes

    Nor the braids the work of an expert wet-nurse

  7. إن ظللت بقناعٍ صبح طلعتها

    فكوكب الغرة الزهراء لم يغبِ

    Were she to be shaded with a morning canopy

    The bright star Venus would not disappear

  8. يقبل الفرع أذيالاً معانقةً

    نطاق خصر على المريخ ذا طربِ

    The bough kisses the train of her embraced waist

    A belt on Mars overflowing with delight

  9. أقامت البدر مخسوفاً قلنسوةٌ

    حمراء فتاكةً بالبيض واليلبِ

    She set up the eclipsed moon as a red bonnet

    Lethal to the white and twisted

  10. تهدي إليك رياح الورد وجتها

    والخد بالورد مثل الشعر بالشنبِ

    Sending you the winds of roses and their breaths

    And a cheek red as hair intertwined with gray

  11. وظبيةٍ من ظباء الروم بارزة

    من الحجاب بحسنٍ غير محتجبِ

    And a doe of the does of Rome protruding

    From the veil with unmatched beauty

  12. لم يتصل بلثامٍ قط مبسمها

    ولم ترم صلة الأطواق باللببِ

    Her smile has never been veiled by a scarf

    Nor the necklaces connected to the amulets

  13. ولا جنى برقعٌ ورد الخدود ولم

    تعطِ الميازر عطفيها ولم تهبِ

    Nor did the veil pick the roses from her cheeks, nor

    Did the bracelets clasp her wrists, nor move

  14. طالت ذوائبها في الخصر لاعبةً

    فأوقفتها لدى فرقٍ عن اللعبِ

    Her tresses dangled at her waist playing

    So she stopped them at distinguished separation

  15. يتلو النصيف الذي في متن قامتها

    تبّت غصون الربى حمالة الحطبِ

    The half moon in the straightness of her stature

    Branches of basil carrying firewood have intertwined

  16. يا شوق طرفي لثدي تحت بردتها

    كأنه كوكبٌ تحت الغمام خبي

    Oh longing of my eyes for a breast under her cloak

    Like a planet under clouds hidden

  17. من لي وفتان جفنيها المراض أبو

    جملٍ وفي خدها القاني أبو لهبِ

    Who can cure my eyelids' passion Abu

    Jamil and in her cheek the heat Abu Lahab

  18. قالت محاسنها الغراء واضحةً

    لم يخلق اللَه هذا الحسن للنقبِ

    Her blond beauty said clearly

    Allah did not create this beauty for concealment

  19. أفدي الحسان بنفسٍ لن ترى بدلاً

    عن العفاف ولم ترغب عن الأدبِ

    I ransom beautiful women with a soul that will not see

    Instead of chastity and did not desire impropriety

  20. نفسٌ على الصبر تسقيه الهوى عوضاً

    عما سقاها من البلبال والوصبِ

    A soul that gives patience the love instead

    Of what it was given of nightingales and meadows

  21. كأنما الدهر يهوى ما هويت فلم

    يفتر عن الصد بين الجد والأربِ

    It is as if fate loves what I love so it does not

    Stop befriending amidst seriousness and playing

  22. قد ساءَه الفضل منا فانبرى حنقاً

    ولم يكن بيننا إلّاهُ من سبب

    Excellence from us has saddened it so it set out angrily

    And there was no reason between us but him

  23. لكن غفرت له لما رأيت بهِ

    ذا الفضل أسعد صدر السادة النجب

    But I forgave him when I saw in him

    Excellence, gladdening the chests of the virtuous elite

  24. قاضي القضاة أمامٌ ليس تأخذهُ

    في اللَه لومة ذي لومٍ وذي عتب

    Judge of judges, an imam no blame

    Takes him in God, no blamer and no reproacher

  25. أبو حنيفة هذا العصر شافعهُ

    ومالك الأفضلين المجد والنسب

    Abu Hanifa is the Shafi`i of this time

    And Malik of the superior, glory and ancestry

  26. ما قال منظومةً إلا وقيل لها

    يا أخت خير أخٍ يا بنت خير أبٍ

    He has not composed a poem but it was said

    Sister of the best brother, daughter of the best father

  27. أو هز أقلامه قالت كتائبها

    ما السيف أصدق أنباءً من الكتبِ

    Or when he shook his pens, his battalions said

    The sword is not more truthful than books

  28. أحيت فضائله الآداب فازدحمت

    في ظله كازدحام المنهل العذبِ

    He revived literature so virtues crowded

    In his shadow like the crowding of a fresh spring

  29. يفاخر العلم فيه كل مزدخر

    فخر اليراع على الهندية القضبِ

    Science boasts in him every hoarded pride

    Pride of the banner over Indian teak

  30. قد استرق المعالي فهي جاريةٌ

    ما بين ألفاظهِ كالسبعة الشهب

    He has stolen greatness which now is a slave girl

    Amongst his words like the seven planets

  31. لو رام ينظم نجم الأفق قافيةً

    لانقاد تحت قوافي النظم غير أبي

    If he wanted the star of the horizon to rhyme

    The stars would follow the rhymes of his poetry

  32. فيا لهُ فاضلاً صدراً به جمعت

    صدارة الروم بين الفضل والرتب

    So excellent is his noble chest in which combined

    The presidency of Rome between merit and positions

  33. شهماً على الحق مرّ الجد ذا شيمٍ

    جاءت مواردها أحلى من الضربِ

    Courageous in truth, serious in struggle, of noble character

    His resources are sweeter than porridge

  34. أقواله أصبحت فعالةً فاتت

    متونهنَّ جلاء الشك والريب

    His words have become actions, surpassing

    Their texts, clear of doubt and suspicion

  35. سمعت منظومه يوماً فاسكرني

    سكراً حلالاً فدع رشف ابنة العنب

    I once heard his verse and it intoxicated me

    With lawful intoxication, so leave the wine of grapes

  36. علّامةٌ لا يُبارى في بلاغته

    سبّاق كل مبارٍ جد في الطلب

    A scholar no one rivals in his eloquence

    Challenger of every serious contestant

  37. جادت أنامله جود اليراع بها

    فأرسلت ساريات الدر والذهب

    His fingers were generous like banners in their generosity

    So they sent twining pearls and gold

  38. سقى المعالي ثناءً فهي عارفةٌ

    عرف الرياض سقاها غادق السحب

    He quenched greatness with praise so it is knowing

    It knew the meadows watered by rainclouds pouring

  39. فالبس المجد حمداً لم يكن خلقاً

    واكسب الحمد مجداً غير مقتضبِ

    So wear praise as praise was not created before

    And earn praise without measure

  40. وافت لبابك يا مولاي قاصرةً

    فتاة نظم عريق الأصل والحسب

    There has come to your door O my Lord short

    Of reach, a girl of noble origin and lineage

  41. تهدي صفاتك نظماً رق تحسده

    مباسم الغانيات الخرد والعرب

    She presents your traits in tender poetry envied

    By the smiles of young and Arab girls

  42. لكنها ترتجي عفواً ومكرمةً

    منك القبول وهذا خير مكتسب

    But she hopes for forgiveness and bounty

    From you, acceptance and this is the best gain

  43. لا زلت مولى إلى علياك وأخدةٌ

    نجب القريض فدم واسلم مدى الحقبِ

    I remain my Lord to your heights though I am diminished

    Of noble parentage, so decide with justice unending!
